The Christopher Ruiz Memorial Scholarship, established by Mrs. Michelle Ruiz-Hernandez, is a wonderful opportunity to alleviate the educational cost to prospective student welders. The primary goal of this scholarship fund will be to use donations in providing financial assistance to students pursuing a post-secondary education in welding.

When Christopher first began his education at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, we quickly learned that although financial aid covered basic needs such as tuition and books required for classes, it did not cover additional costs associated with the welding program. Thankfully, because of the welding program at Robstown ISD, Christopher already had some of the items he needed to continue the welding program at Del Mar College; however, more supplies were needed. Additional supplies had to be purchased at our family’s expense so that he could continue the welding program at Del Mar College successfully. Unfortunately, some students are not afforded this same opportunity. 

Generally, after paying for tuition and fees, books, and taxes, any leftover financial aid is refunded to students typically 4-6 weeks after classes begin. Sometimes this is not ideal considering students need their supplies almost immediately to be successful in their courses, and in most cases, some students do not have leftover funds. With this scholarship, students will be able to overcome any financial obstacles during this transitional period. The Christopher Ruiz Memorial Scholarship will help welding students begin their post-secondary education on a positive note without the stress of financial burden.
